Most Fighters Have Tried This Martial Arts Heavy Bag Workout

By Douglas Matthews

Every fighter should incorporate a martial arts heavy bag workout drill into his training because it helps build speed, and power. The fighter must always work on ways to increase his speed and power if he wants to dominate his opponents. Speed without power is as limiting to a fighter as power without speed. It has been said that the fighter who trains the hardest is the fighter who will win the prize.

Fighters need not only speed and power, but also coordination so that the fighter can throw effective, powerful, fast punches. The heavy bag drill will increase the fighter's stamina, and cardiovascular strength. This drill can be worked on with a partner or a fighter can choose to work out on his own.

The objective of the drill is to throw as many punches as one possibly can during a sixty minute set. The fighter will build speed as well as stamina with this drill. Sixty seconds might sound like a short interval, but for the person throwing punches as fast as possible, this is a long time.

Throw punches such as jabs, body shots, and hooks, and other types of punches during the one minute set. Throwing different types of punches while drilling helps the body and brain to work together as one. This routine will increase physical power, however it also increases mind power, which many fighters think is more important than muscle strength.

Some fighters will become tired during their sets and sacrifice proper fighting technique. But it is important to be disciplined on each punch. Use the correct fighting stance and the right punching technique throughout each set rather than simply striking the bag with speed and little power.

Stand a proper distance from the bag, not too close because this can impair one's stance. If working out with a partner, he should hold the bag to keep it from swinging out of striking range. Have a relaxed, yet firm stance. Try and increase the number of punches thrown, however, remember to keep punches consistent and keep proper fighting stance throughout the drill.

A martial arts heavy bag workout should be incorporated into every fighter's training regimen because this work out builds speed, power, and stamina. A fighter can do this exercise with a partner, or alone. The purpose is to throw as many punches, power punches, as possible in a one minute period.
