Bring The Blood Out In Horror Movies

By Adrianna Noton

When it comes to horror movies, the fact of the matter is that these films are more popular than ever and that people of all ages and from all walks of life enjoy watching them. In fact, the popularity of such stories has spawned several long running franchises and fans dedicated to the various nuances of a scary story, splintering the once singular word into many multiple subgenres.

Some people may wonder why anyone would ever want to watch a film and have an experience which is meant to utterly scare the person watching it. However, what might be surprising to people to find out is that not only such an experience is popular, but that ever since the invention of films people have been making ones that are scary, and that stories that are meant to scare the audience are even older than that.

To understand the reason why such stories have an enduring popularity the discerning viewer will be asked to look into the history of mass entertainment, starting with the ever popular plays of ancient Greece. Although none of these plays would be recognizable as being scary, despite containing their fair share of monsters and gore, they were created around the principle of catharsis.

Catharsis simply means the release of negative feelings through such a medium. The idea is that the audience, by experiencing something scary, or something sad, is through the action of living the story through the actors in the play, purged of those negative emotions at the end of the story in one single release moment, known as the climax.

It is no secret that today's movies are designed to give the audience these climactic moments by the bucketful, using a variety of modern means, but the idea has always stayed the same. By facing our most primeval fears, treading the dark waters of the subconscious, we are made stronger and more whole by the end of the experience and less afraid of what lies in the shadows.

Of course, this does not work for everyone. In fact, some people eschew this type of entertainment entirely, and it is important to note that children with their overactive imaginations are best left out of such entertainment. For those who do wish to enjoy such an experience, though, the modern era has brought many different choices.

Viewers of all stripes will be happy to know that advances in technology have made it far easier than ever before to become a purveyor of these types of movies even if one has not really watched them before. Many websites categorize and specialize in providing these films for the discerning viewer regardless of what they are interested in.

When it comes to horror movies, the viewer of today can start and watch the history of filmmaking when it comes to this genre, as well as enjoy many popular franchises from their beginnings decades ago to present day. The options are out there, it just takes a little bit of research.
