Factors to Consider When Buying Jiu Jitsu Gear

By Joan Meleen

If you want your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) training sessions to be enjoyable, then you should not compromise on your Jiu Jitsu gear selection. A lot of people out there will quickly opt for the unprofessional move of replacing this gear with others that resemble it. The gears differ in styles, so such a move is unwelcome. Moreover, acquiring the correct gear helps a lot in making your training sessions a success in many areas, for instance grip making, placements of the hands, submission defense, grappling and so much more.

The Cloth Weaves Criterion of Classifying the Gear

From the above factor, you therefore find that you cannot overlook the importance of buying the proper attire. To start with, the gears usually come based on various criteria. The most common one is perhaps based on the weave of the cloth used for making the gear. Weaves determine the lifespan of the gear, especially with the jacket, nevertheless, long lasting jackets in many cases come with similar pants.

The gears come under the following categories of the weaves classification: single weaves, double weaves, gold weaves and the specialized weaves. To help you in your selection, there are appropriate weave labels on the gear. BJJ starters can find the single weave to be a better option for them. This is due to their light nature and the fact that they cost less. The double weaves aren't that light in weight. Therefore, buying correct double weave gear means that they have to be properly fitting so as not to compromise on your comfort during training.

The gold weaves are usually made by mixing both the two primary weaves, and that is single and double weaves. This characteristic enhances their durability but decreases their weight. As such, many people who purchase them do so for BJJ competition purposes.

Generally, any gear that does not fall under the above categories will normally be categorized as 'others.' Most of them are known for their ultra light weight nature.

Purchasing Based on the Size of the Gear

Numerous sizes exist for the BJJ gears. Manufacturers play a very key role in the variations of these sizes. Letter 'A' stands for men's gears, and the minimum size is A0 while the maximum one is A6. Letter 'F' stands for ladies' sizes. The sizes meant for children are very conspicuous in the shops. It is vital to buy your correct size in order to eliminate the need of having to size up these gears which is not an easy task.

Gear Collar Consideration

Something you shouldn't also overlook when purchasing your gear is the collar of the same. Base your selection on two aspects of the collar, and that is thickness and toughness. Each extreme has its own advantages and disadvantages, with the less stiff options being comfortable but with little advantage over your opponent's attack and chocking.

Generally, many jacket collars are made of cotton. However, it is not uncommon to come across some that have rubber in them.

Going by the Gear Color when Buying the Gear

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gear has its brand colors and you can choose these or other color types that you prefer. Blue and white are the traditional colors, and most of the times when taking part in competitions, you should be dressed in these colors for you to be allowed to participate. Consequently, it becomes important to counter check with your instructor first before setting out to purchase gear of any other colors.
